The Raj Palace, Jaipur

Ornateness is given unprecedented reverence in this palace. It not only contains one of the largest suites, but also the most expensive suite in the world. The Maharaja's Pavilion spreads out over 16000 square feet (1486 square metres) with four floors and a private entrance through a victory corridor. A gold-panelled elevator shuffles you between the levels that include a double-height reception room and the original Maharaja's sleeping chamber whose stucco walls are painted in gold leaf and covered in mirror work. There is also a library, dining room, private kitchen and guest room. The pleasure pavilion now includes a roof top terrace with Jacuzzi and views out over the city. Activities like the nightly puppet show and a Royal Baggi carriage tour drawn by four white horses to Jal Mahal Lake keep your imagination in Raj mode when you step outside the pavilion. A private cinema takes you into India today.
